Ponorogo is a region in the province of East Java. This area is located west of the province of East Java and the adjacent province of Central Java, or more precisely 220 km southwest of the provincial capital of East Java, Surabaya. The Regency covers an area of 1.305,7 km2 and it had a population of 855.281 at the 2010 Census, the latest official estimate (as at 2014) is 879.306. The regency lies between 92 and 2563 meters above sea level.
How to Ponorogo
Ponorogo Regency is located on the southwest of Surabaya. The distance of Ponorogo regency to the capital of East Java province is about 200 km. This distance could reached by bus during 5 hours. While, from Jakarta be at 800 km. From Solo, the city of Central Java could be 3 hours through Wonogiri or 4 hours through Madiun. Usually Madiun becomes the capital of transit when the travelling person travelled by the train. In the meantime, when they want to travel by aircraft they could change to plane in Surabaya or in Solo.
From the South, could be served by Pacitan bus route to Ponorogo and Trenggalek - Ponorogo. There are various sorts of the route of the rural Transport (ANGDES) and the urban Transport (ANGKOT) In the personally regency. They connected the subdistrict with the capital of the regency. Could be said, there is no subdistrict that was not covered by the public's transport. Beside 'ANGDES' and 'ANGKOT' they also has pedicab transport, buggy and the taxi bike.

History
According to the Babad Ponorogo history, Ponorogo was founded when Bathoro Katong conquered the Wengker region. This region had previously been controlled by Suryo Ngalam Wengker. Bathoro Katong originally settled in modern-day Pekalongan in what is now the village Setono in district Jenangan. Though faced with many obstacles, Raden Katong, Aji Selo, and Ki Ageng Mirah and his family continued to establish settlements in the region.
With the consent of all parties, Bathoro Katong established the Duchy Ponorogo on 11 August 1496.This date is celebrated as the founding of Ponorogo, and is corroborated by ancient objects, such as a pair of stone gilang located in front of the fifth gate of the Katong Batara tomb complex. The gilang contains the forms of a human meditating, trees, eagle and elephants (candrasengkala gilang memet); all of which combine to represent the Saka year 1496.

REOG
Reog is a traditional dance that become the main identity for Ponorogo regency. Because of this, Ponorogo is also known as Reog city. This theatre has been known wide in Indonesian even foreign tourists.
Reog National Festival is held every years along the anniversary of Ponorogo regency and Grebeg Suro celebration. Reog dance is also staged full moon nightly in paseban, Ponorogo Town Square. Reog told about the struggle for a prince who will propose to a lovely pretty princess .
The interesting of Reog is his main leading figure named Singo Barong. The dancer of Singo Barong bear the mask about 30 - 40 kg weight and supported by the strength of their teeth. The other leading figure in Reog include Kelono Sewandono, Bujang Anom, Jatil and Warok. The visitors can enjoy this traditional dance only in Ponorogo, East Java - Indonesia. The only area that has REOG dance is Ponorogo, not in other country.
GREBEG SURO
Is the biggest culture event in Ponorogo regency that held on a certain occasion of welcomed Islam New Year or Saka New Year that often known as one suro date (one of Javanese month). This agenda entered East Java tourism calendar (Calendar of event). Grebeg Suro is the ritual culture incident and became the party site of Ponorogo people. Usually it begun a week before 1 Suro.
It is the series of Grebeg Suro agenda is Reog National festival, various good activity sorts the race and the exhibition and ended with Larungan agenda in Ngebel lake. The parade of the elephant statue that consist of the musical procession and the elephant statues. Those statues have received by human kind and climbed onto by two children. This art is has influenced by Islam culture.
